How did Halloween start?
Halloween- or Hallows' Eve- can be traced back to Celtic Culture in Ireland. According to their religion, November 1st was New Years' on their calendar. The celebration would start October 1st. The spirits of all who died would rise up and roam the earth on this night. They placed pumpkins to ward off the evil spirits.
People would wear costumes and go "mumming", they would go from door to door giving prayers for treats.

Canadian Thanksgiving
The origins of Canadian Thanksgiving are closely connected to the traditions of Europe than of the United States. Long before Europeans settled in North America, festivals of thanks and celebrations of harvest  took place in Europe in October. The very first Thanksgiving celebration in North America took place when Martin Frobisher, an explorer from England, arrived in Newfoundland in 1578. He wanted to give thanks for his safe arrival to “The New World”. Thanksgiving was declared a national holiday in 1879.

Recipe for Pumpkin Pie
  • 1 1/4 cups pumpkin puree, canned or fresh
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon all-purpose flour
  • 2 eggs, lightly beaten
  • 1 cup evaporated milk, undiluted
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 unbaked pastry shell (9-inch)
  • whipped cream or whipped topping, for garnish

Preparation:

Combine pumpkin, sugar, salt, spices, and flour in a medium mixing bowl. Add eggs; mix well. Add evaporated milk, water, and vanilla; mix well. Pour into pastry-lined pie pan. Bake at 400° for 15 minutes; reduce heat to 350° and bake about 35 minutes longer, or until center is set.

Every Thanksgiving, all of my family go over to my grandparent’s house for thanksgiving dinner. We have stuffed turkey, 3 of them actually. To me, thanksgiving is a day to look forward to too, for all the food!

Terry Fox Foundation
Terry Fox was a hero to many, he was born in Winnipeg on July 28, 1958 and diagnosed with bone cancer in his right leg in 1977 and he had his leg amputated. While he was in the hospital, the suffering of other cancer victims affected him in such a way that he decided to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research.

By February 1, 1981, he had raised 24.17 million for cancer research. He died in June 1981. On May 26, 1988, The Terry Fox Run became a Trust, independent from Canadian Cancer Society. Now, every year in September, schools have a Terry Fox run which raises more money for cancer research.

The Terry Fox Foundation is responsible for raising up to 20 million each year in Canada. To date, over 600 million has been raised for cancer research in Terry’s name! The foundation not only raises money for research, but it also continues to share the story of Terry Fox. The Terry Fox foundation strives to maintain the heroic effort that Terry had.

IT9-Paragraph on InfoTech

To me information technology is the use of computers and software to manage data. It is the development and improvement of the usage of computers. In some companies, information technology is called IS for "information services". The InfoTech part of a company would be in charge of the transmitting of information and storing it, then receiving it later. I like InfoTech because it's fun to learn and I enjoy learning about computers and different software.
